The Texture of Marketing
Good marketing does not blur the texture of a brand.
When working on marketing, it is natural to look at the numbers.
Views, clicks, saves, conversions, and follower growth.
They matter.
A brand needs to reach people, and we need to understand whether that reach is actually happening.
But when we follow the numbers too closely, another question often comes up.
How much can we change the brand in order to create a response?
The tone of Instagram, the hook of an ad, the rhythm of a video, and the way a product page explains things are all different.
Each channel has its own language, and the same message does not always work when it is simply copied and pasted everywhere.
In that sense, I think marketing is close to translating a brand for each channel.
But in the process of translating, the original texture can start to blur.
A sharper line, a louder image, a faster edit, a more immediate expression.
These choices may work in the short term, but when they continue to pile up, the brand can slowly begin to speak in too many different voices.
Short-term reactions can be made.
But over time, it can become harder to understand what kind of brand it really is.
Good marketing is not only about making a brand look bigger.
It is about keeping the center of the brand intact, while allowing it to speak differently depending on the channel.
The important thing is not for every channel to look exactly the same.
It is for the brand to feel like the same brand, even when it speaks in different ways.
If branding is the work of defining a brand’s texture,
marketing is, in my view, the work of translating that texture into the world.
And good marketing does not blur the texture of the brand while doing so.
A space for recording, experimenting, and thinking again.
